Leche de magnesia

Tipos de Reacciones Químicas (Sustitución Doble), Bases y Sales

Materiales

- 1 ½ cucharadita de sal de Epsom (Sulfato de magnesio)

- 2 cucharaditas de amoniaco de uso doméstico (Ajax amonia)

- 1 frasco pequeño de alimento infantil o vaso de plástico transparente

- Agua

Procedimiento

Llenamos el frasco hasta la mitad con agua.

Agregamos una cucharadita de sal de Epsom al agua y disuelve perfectamente hasta que no se observen cristales.

Agregamos 2 cucharaditas de amoniaco al frasco. No lo mezcle.

Dejamos reposar la solución cinco minutos.

Explicación

El nombre químico del amoniaco doméstico es hidróxido de amonio y el de la sal de Epsom es sulfato de magnesio. Al mezclar el amoniaco y la sal de Epsom, se produce una reacción en la que uno de los productos es hidróxido de magnesio. Este es una sustancia blanca que no se disuelve con facilidad en agua. Después de un breve período de reposo, podrás observar que la solución cambia de color y las partículas blancas que se forman se depositan (sedimentan en el fondo del frasco).

El hidróxido de magnesio forma parte de una medicina conocida como “leche de magnesia” y se le denomina “leche” debido a su apariencia.
